My Hitachi DK23BA-20 HDD has very bad sector problems in the first 1% of the drive. Is is possible to cut the drive from the beginning, so that normal software, FDISK, format, etc. ignores the bad part of the drive?

Thanks for this forum, and for writing this great software.

Hi, do you know how to work with Disk Manager from Ontrack ?
If you know ( and the disk is yours ) you can look for an old version of the DM, I think that version 6.0 or 6.04. This DM version let you point the cylinder that you will start your partion - when you use this DM to do the Partiton of your disk. So you can start your partition after the bads.
Bone chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for DM or disk mananger and combine with the word Ontrack or DM quantum in google and you will be able to find it.
About your question, yes with disk manager from Ontrack is possible to determine the point where you want to put the MBR.
I really do not know much about hard disk I'm just a student also I'm not an expert, but for people that want to work with hard disk ONTRACK is just a basic knowledge.

HI,
I think esjones means something like HPA, but for the beginning of the drive, there are many tools that you can use to make partition start from whatever Cyl you wants, but AFAIK no ones that can use to CUT first portion of drive and hide it.

Regards

I have been using Partition Magic (PM) for this.
You can make dummy partition and HIDE it.
All done in PM. And it worked ok.
I have been making hidden partitions not only at the
beginning or end of HDDs, but also in the middle of it.

The problem is that partition prgz SEE that hidden partition
in some way, so you didn't really cut away the bad part, but
only hid it from user and OS. If you use it for your HDDs,
then no problem, but you can't fool other people giving them
"100% working" hdds, becouse they can see these hidden
partitions. If they know how, of course :).
