What hardware to unlock ata password on IDE PATA drive.

September 7th, 2020, 14:43

Hello all.

I have a HDD from a Volvo RTI sat nav sustem. I know they are locked with an ATA password. I also know what the user and master passwords are used. I tried to unlock the drive with a usb to ide dongle. It failed to unlock, on inserting back into the volvo. The car is now unable to read the drive. The drive still spins and registers in the bios.

So i bought a cheap older pc with IDE used a 40pin to 44pin adapter ide cable, opened up victoria, to find the remove password lock opens greyed out. With a error "disabled in api" Ive looked through the pc bios for options to change mode, i cant see a thing.

My question is what hardware do i need to unlock this drive (if its even possible since the usb unlock fail) Do i need a specific chipset? I have various laptops all sata only. I have a pc thats sata only, and the older pc mentioned above.

Thank you all, thanks for reading.

Any idea if a sata to PATA adaptor in a laptop would work?

Oh. Sorry i didnt know it was relevant. Its a Toshiba MK4050GAC. Apparently the password on the volvo rti drives is "siihakawhc2o6937" with additional spaces.
Theres a brief turtorial on how to unlock it, but no info on the hardware required.

Thank you :D

Should have read the Victoria log. Using windows xp 32bit now. Seems to all work fine. However, i now think the passwords are incorrect   :)

ZU unlocked it with ease. Though, i probably needed to retain the password. Im guessing it wont work in the volvo now unless i can sniff for the password on the volvo headunit. Sod it lol, i wanted a project, ill integrate google maps. Although I might play with the volvo headunit too see if i can get the pass for fun.

Used cheap 44pin to 40pin ide cable.
Used rufus, created bootable free dos. Dragged zu over. Stuck the drive as master primary. Then just "zu /p" instant unlock.
It took so long to get to the c: prompt in freedos with the drive connected! So long infact i feel asleep! lol.

I was going to suggest ZU, but you already knew the password, and then you did something which stopped the drive working in the car. Have you actually tried the unlocked drive? Maybe the Volvo will lock it again.

Yes i tried it early, nothing. I have no clue why connecting the HDD to the USB and trying the password unlock stopped volvo being able to read it, in the hidden diagnostic menu it says it cant read the HDD. I had opened the unit previously to check the optical drives laser. Thats what i initially went in to fix! Then discovered the HDD and thought it would be a good idea to try back it up...... lol. Maybe i should reopen it, see if ive done something silly.

Im not bothered that it doesn't work anymore. Now im just curious. This in interesting.

I do have a 2 channel 150mhz digital oscilloscope. But im guessing the logic is striped across multiple data pins? so two channels not enough. hmm. Ill do some reading.

Coming to think of it you may be correct. I think i read somewhere that it auto locks again once in the unit. Maybe ive actually messed something up in the unit grrr. Ill be back.

That is common password for Kenwood based navigation system, not only for Volvo but for most of other vehicals
"siihakawhc2o6937" in revers 2bytes order is "ishikawacho29673" City Ishikawacho and 29673 with adress and PO of Kenwood company in Japan.

Thank you.

I did wonder why they picked that password  The PCB in the unit seems to have a Mitsubishi logo on it, but the part numbers return nothing.

So i took it the unit apart once again, it all looks fine. I was very gentle with it the first time too, and the hdd spins up. hmm. So the only thing i can think of is try another HDD, probably wont work, but im curious. Ive already made a clone of the original drive with a tool mentioned on this forum.

Now the question is which HDD to choose. If i understand correctly some drives store the AT password more securely than others. So i might as well pick the least secure drive in the hope of grabbing the password should it actually work. It might be helpful for others if they have a HDD ZU doesnt unlock. On first reading it seems western digital is the way to go. However, more reading is needed before on go on ebay. :D

Yes, you can replace drive with any brand, but change passport iD and set the same ATA password. Even old IDE SSD drives you can use.

Think im going to have to give up this one. Same response no matter what i do. Maybe theres some HDD initialise sequence that must be performed. oh well.

Thanks for the help.
