 Post subject: Windows Explorer Freezes Moving/Deleting Files

I experienced several instances of Windows Explorer (and TeraCopy) freezing when trying to move or delete files on a 4 TB WD Red.
This led me to suspect that the drive was failing.

I copied everything off the drive and ran an erase test using HDDScan.
I expected to see a bunch of bad blocks or at least some really slow ones, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
However, there is a degradation of speed as the test progresses, which makes me think something is up.

Is it possible that there was a file system issue that led to the problems I was experiencing? Or is this drive on its way out?
I did run CHKDSK to try to fix the file system and problems persisted so I ruled out the file system but, since these test results don't necessarily seem indicative of a bad drive, I'm second guessing that.

Thoughts?

I ran a Western Digital Data LifeGuard erase test as well and it passed.
I'm not sure what to think, any feedback is much appreciated.

This degradation of speed is totally normal.

The speed reduces as the heads move from the outer tracks to the inner ones. That's because the outermost tracks have have roughly twice as many bits per track as the innermost ones.

Regarding reads: I ran the Western Digital Data LifeGuard extended test fairly recently and that passed as well.

We do not see your raw values in your SMART screen, but it seems perfectly good! (maybe take another one with CrystalDiskInfo)

The extended test we see in screen is another full erase.
Are you sure you have done the full read extended test?

Perhaps your problem is from the source/destination drive if no error was found, or perhaps not related to hard drives.

What was the problem reported by CHKDSK?
Was your drive connected through SATA?

Are you sure you have done the full read extended test?

I had performed a full read extended test previously, before I decided the problem was scary enough to warrant destructive testing.
I'll run it again tonight to be sure the results haven't changed.

The problems occurred when deleting or moving within the same drive so no other drive was involved.

Be aware that all those files were surely corrupted!

To normally repair those errors, you have to put the /f parameter to chkdsk, but it will have surely not change that those files were corrupted.
Be careful in the future with chkdsk /f, because sometime it decide to full remove a file that is just a little corrupted.

Those kind of chkdsk errors often appear because of incoming shutdown.

Anyway, it seems that this drive is safe, and that it was logical errors.
Done your last full read extended test, and re-use it if no errors.
