Hello!

I have an accidentally formatted WD My Passport 1TB. Quick Formatted NTFS on Win10.
The software i have tried to recover - all of them FULL SCAN in RAW.
Recuva, PhotoRec, R-Studio, FileScavenger, UFS.
Non of the software found any relevant files except the metafiles.

I'm not a DR, but i have a previous successfull experience in recovering data at my work.
This is a first time when after a q-format, no data found.

What can be done additionally to try to recover?

Thank you very much!

What exact model is the drive?

Some newer WD drives support TRIM

This is a magnetic drive - WDBYNN0010BBK.
If i'm correct TRIM is SSD only, right?

This drive probably has built in encryption but is it possible the drive was also using Bitlocker encryption or some other?

Try using Dmde and check for partitions etc and take a look at the sectors with the included hex viewer.

No, that is incorrect. Newer SMR models now have a spinner version of TRIM.

It's not the formatting but the TRIM that does it. The intentional signal to delete instructs the drive to add the sectors to the clean up list. Unless it gets interrupted or stopped at a drive level, deletion is essentially erasure. The method of deletion makes no difference. At least that's my understanding, which is open to correction.

Basically the data is still there but the 2nd translator is cleared. There is some chance to recover some things but the results will be unstructured (ie raw recovery).

When executing the format. You can replicate the scenario. Take a new USB drive from the same family. Fill it with a particular pattern, say 99, so that it stands out. Then execute a quick format. Repower drive. Look in hex. You will no longer see 99s.
and which mod is second translator, 190?
Yes

There is one DR company that claims to have their own solution, but there is nothing in the DIY realm, nor anything in the usual commercial tools.

On these TRIM affected SMR disks, has anyone tried to use the PBA access functionality for a RAW recovery in the recent version of PC3000?

John.

Not possible...they are located in the US and we know that nobody in North America does this level of work and that they always rely on the guys from Russia.

Doomer claims to be able to do that with some limitations. He's in Chicago if i'm not mistaken.

I assumed that's what pepe was referring to.
