Hello,

Drive isn't detected by any OS and when I connect to it via Putty I'm getting multiple instances of "Servo Op=0100 Resp=0003"

Full output:

From what I understand it's most likely an issue with the heads or preamp right? Safe to assume that all the data on it is gone forever? Drive belongs to an older client of mine and she wasn't keeping up with her backups.

Thanks!

It's where I'd start.

Depends if there has been any physical damage you might be lucky and just need the heads swapping out. Either way not looking promising for a quick or cheap fix :(

Thanks for the quick response! I know this is a bit of a loaded question, but how much would it cost to recover the data? Assuming it can be done. I'm shopping around for data recovery services and want to make sure that the quotes are fair.

I'm the other side of the pond so it's difficult for me to comment on pricing over there. It would also depend if the damage is just to the head or to the platter surface which is an unknown until someone has a look. A quick check on a few members website show anywhere between 600-1000 USD wouldn't be a surprise, there are cheaper options but I'm not sure of their donor policy and it's highly likely you'll need at least 1.

The level of media damage is what mainly determines recoverability as well as price. There is a wide scale of recovery companies, some will tell you it is unrecoverable even if it is just having minor issues because of their lack of time/knowledge. So it is quite hard to elaborate your options from the distance.
It would be nice to know your location to advise a bit more closely...
