Hi all,

As I was going through my old stuff, I found my old HDDs; one of them, Maxtor 4D040H2 40GB that doesn't spin or click at all and there's a hot spot on the PCB when plugged in (around a chip by AGERE); after doing a bit of research I got the impression that the PCB might be dead. I have no idea what's in the HDD, it might even be empty. So, I don't need professional recovery, however, I am willing to try buying a donor PCB to see if it would work. Here's my question: I see some donor boards out there with the same information I provided below. Suppose I purchase one of these and just swap the PCBs. Would my drive start working (Of course I am assumıng there are no other issues with the disks, heads, etc.) without any other ROM, chip etc. transfer between boards since, unfortunately, my DIV skills and workbench are not sufficient for that type of high skill, hardware demanding tasks?

Could you upload a detailed photo of your PCB?

AIUI, the numbers on the largest IC would be important as they would reflect the ROM version. This ROM firmware needs to match the firmware in a reserved system area (SA) on the platters.

I would think that you would need to match "040106000" and "D741667DPGF" on the DSP chip.

You must match the code on PCB connector

"C2FDB"

There is a PCB matching guide in section 6 of this document:

https://www.acelab.ru/dep.pc/doc.pc3000dos/060713.001/Maxtor_DSP_POKER_ARDENT_ver4.pdf

Google can translate it if need be.
