Reading ROM from newer WD drives

October 27th, 2022, 9:32

Dear HDDGuru Community,

I have some newer WD USB/SATA HDD to recovery and I intend to use the new SED unlocking feature in PC3k. I wanted to use the programmer with a clip (CH341A). The only problem is that the clip is working only with thicker ROM chips (from older WD drives), the new chips from Charger/Palmer/etc. are too slim to read. How do you guys read the ROM chips without unsoldering?

Thank you very much for any help!

Oliver

Alternatively try one of the higher end probes here:

Or if there is no way to attach a probe to the chip at all. The commercial or DIY version of this:
