How to start troubleshooting non working hard drive

November 26th, 2022, 11:56

I have HGST drive, model HTS541010A9E680 which does not have any reaction - when connected to computer.
Pictures are included.
Can you please advise troubleshooting process?
I have practice in logic boards of cell phones and tablets reparing but not in hard drive reparing.
Thank help

Measure the voltage across the "A1" TVS diode near the SATA power connector. If +5V is missing, then test for shorts to ground at this point. Also test the tiny smt fuse (or inductor?) at the SATA 5V pins.

I have 5V on the diode and also on SATA.

I also measured some other voltages on the logic board , but it is not easy to find a problem without a schematic.

Are there datasheets for that TLS2601HDCARG4 and 88i9305-TLA2 available?

Thank you for help

Any history. Are you sure it's the original HDD board ?

What are the voltages at V1 and V2?

The date code on the PCB is 1321, ie week 21 of 2013.

The manufacture date on the label is 4 July, 2013.

Therefore the PCB is probably native (or a very close match).

BTW, I expect that V1 and V2 are +1.2V (Vcore) and +2.5V (Vio). Both the ROM and SDRAM require a 2.5V supply.

Just saw this:

The RV sensor in the top left corner has fallen off. :-)

Thank you for your replies.
I have these voltages:
V1 is 0.87V
V2 is 2.53V
Picture you posted,

saying
The RV sensor in the top left corner has fallen off
is not of my logic board.
I am enclosing the correct picture again

V1 seems rather low, what do you think?

The Vcore voltage for older ARM cores was 1.2V. Later cores operated at 0.9V. I can't recall when the change happened.

The most expedient approach would be to purchase a donor PCB and transfer the "ROM" (LE25FU406C).

The only other possibility I can think of is that the drive may be configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS). A tool such as HDAT2 can disable PUIS.

Thank you for your reply.
if I connect the harddrive to a computer and try to install Linux on the computer, the drive will be detected, even if in PUIS mode?

Re: How to start troubleshooting non working hard drive

AFAIK, Linux will automatically spin up any PUIS-enabled drive.

I tried under Linux but the harddrive was not detected either.
Do you have any other idea what I should try, except the logic board replacement?

I am not aware of any datasheets for the MCU or motor controller.

I would dump the contents of the "ROM", but you must not damage this chip. It contains information that is unique to each drive.

Re: How to start troubleshooting non working hard drive

But what is the point in dumping of the ROM?
Checking that ROM is working?
Or test anything else?
I do not know what exactly the content should be.

If the ROM is corrupt, the drive will not come ready. I can verify the checksum of one portion of the ROM ("NVRAM").
