I have 2 external LaCIE Samsung HD154UI 1,5 TB USB harddrives.
I am experiencing strange behaviour with both of them, using them on a laptop.

Worked on a previous laptop, but not this one (Dell Latitude E7240).

The HDD is connected directly to the laptop USB port with a USB A to USB B data cable and has an external 12V 2A power supply.

Behaviour:
When I connect the HDD, I hear a windows sound indicating that a new device has been connected and the file explorer pops up showing the contents of the HDD. I can access files and see what is on the device.

For some time the HDD works well. However, if I transfer files to it, at some point it stops working.
This is when I hear a windows sound similar to the one that plays when a new device has been connected, and then this message pops up:


The same thing happens if I try to run Crystal Disk Info to diagnose the HDD. If I run the program, then I hear the windows sound and the error message pops up.

This is the information I am getting:











If I then turn off the power to the HDD and start it again, it shows up as normal.
I can then access the properties and don't see any errors.









Then - if I try to transfer files the error will happen after a little time.
Or if I try to run Crystal Disk to diagnose the disk, the error will show immediately and crystal disk will not recognize / find the HDD.

What I have tried:

- Run the laptop manufacture drivers tool to detect if there are driver updates including BIOS.
- Run Snappy Driver Installer to detect if there are driver updates.
- Run Windows update.
- Upgrade from Win10 to Win11.
- Remove all USB devices from the device management.
- Download LaCie thunderbold driver for Windows.
- Restart, remove battery and cable.
- Connect to different USB ports.
- Uninstall device from device manager.
- Disable / enable device from device manager.

Any clues on what could be wrong?

try hooking it up the drive using sata interface (you need a desktop computer for that). You may also try a different usb-sata bridge but native sata is better. perhaps booting to a linux live distro.

Thanks for the reply.
Today I tried to hook it up to another laptop (windows surface book) and experienced no problems. So I am convinced that this has to be a problem with the laptop drivers somehow.

Is there a way to completely remove all USB drivers related to this, or is there a log somewhere that could help us dig deeper to identify the problem? I have attached the error logs in the previous post.

By the way: I also modified the power saving settings to make sure that the USB does not go idle.
