What are the chances of swapping the platter (single) to a working unit of same model/code? Is head alignment an issue? PCB tested ok on other drive.

After testing with some spare drive, I found that when removing the platter, the fit is not exact. There seems to bee a fraction of a mm of sideways play. This can't be good. I suspect changing the head stack (2 heads) would be safer, since by removing the platter, it would be impossible to have it 'centered' the same way as it was before.

Or is there a way around this. Whould the minor off center be still readable?

I wish there was more info on this subject on the net, it's dissapoiting how unavailbale this kind of info is. Damn recovery labs, keeping all this for themselves!

Yes, that is not good. Changing heads would be a wiser idea...

i have changed the whole media to another hdd of the same model and it worked fi9 . maybe u should try changing those heads the hdd may work ok

Hi,

it is possible to center one platter, as it is needed in DM+ 8 drives having head related failures. However if it is possible to change only the head assembly, U should do that. I mean if the motor is not seized and the windings are workable (not shorted or broken).
Up till now I haven't succeeded changing more than one platters.
Anyway U may need head alignment if the original head assembly is damaged.

Would you center the platter using a spacer such as a piece of paper all around the spindle to remove the gap?

Does the Maxtor factory center the platter or just leaves it as is, off-center and formats the drive?

How would one perform ahead alignment?

Tried centering a platter on a spare drive using scotch tape around the spindle, and the tape was a bit too thick, the platter was too hard to push down on the spindle.

What do you guys use?
