 Post subject: WD400EB - Firmware problem

I'm trying to fix a WD400EB for a friend of mine. It is detected by the BIOS, but after that I get the error message 'Secondary Master Hard Disk Fail' and I'm unable to access the data. When searching on the internet I came to the conclusion that most likely the firmware is damaged. On this forum I found the program check_wd which gave the following log:

One of the solutions to similair problems I found on this forum is regenerating the translator (with the program wd.exe). Is this going to fix the drive and enable me to recover the data on it (this is the primary goal), or is regenerating the translator not enough in this case?

So, regenerate translator with any program you like and you will have access for you data.

I think I have a similar problem, my hd is a wd2000jb, i was using it as a extra data storage drive and did not install anything on it. But one day it just failed and started making "funny" sounds. The bios still detected it, but it took longer and made the "funny" sounds, but then i said that the "primary slave drive fails". I tried various programs, check_wd.com, file scavenger, the WD Data lifeguard tools, Knoppix 5.1.1, rstudio, win hex, but none of them detected my drive.
check wd says:
Error: !!! Drive Busy Time Out Expired !!

I do not really want to pay a guy $1,000 for my info, but I still want it back. Thanks in advance for any info.

The JB drives are very bad unlike the BB drives they cannot be recovered by just regenerating the translator they have to be repaired by rewriting the firwmare u will need atleast pc3k isa for that purpose . u will have to spend a little money for that .
