When i sought this message in this utility, sayng sort of "your drive is unsuported, can't unlock it" ,
i thought that unlocking is not possible at all, now thank you for info , good to know that it is possible, that's only what i wanted to know.

BlackST, thanks. I didn't want to be offensive, but don't You think that posting just a "LOL" under someones words, is a bit non adequate?
I also consider it funny about saying if its your private OR someone else's data. Everybody posts about his own hard drive AND most people say the dont care about the data. AND the funny thing is that everyone suspects them of gambling with clients drives and data that in fact IS/CAN BE valuable for someone ;))
But nevermind...
My particular WD5000AVVS was left by my friend who didn't needed it couse its unusable for PC, he wanted to send it to trash, no data on it, maybe some movie recorded with that hardware from TV. he didnt want it back, and i don't want to throw it away neither :) So now i leave it, maybe later i will find someone in my city to unlock it. Won;t be easy to find someone, couse, you now, small city and... its FAR WEST here :]

PS. Salvation HD doctor for WD will unlock this particular drive?

I hope someone out there can help. I have this drive that I can't used due to the SATA password lock but I don't have the password. I don't need/want the data, just would like to use the drive so I don't have to buy a new one.

I followed the directions back on page 4 using the MHDD.zip file on a boot floppy. After running .dump or .dump2 I get "ERROR: drive reports error". Anyone have any suggestions?

I also tried ZU without success.

Well, I gave it another go and it must have been in a better mood this time as it populated the .bin files but these look very different from those posted above. I've attached zips of both a locked and unlocked drive. Anyone have suggestions for decoding them?

MHDD info for unlocked drive.

Thanks to fzabkar for pointing out the obvious difference between the locked and unlocked version of the 42.BIN file. I was looking for difference between them by flipping back and forth but I think my view was clipping the last two lines where the password was sitting.

Comparing the two 42.BIN files, the entire file this time, shows the difference is the string "3wareUserPassword" is in the locked but not the unlocked version.

I had actually tried 3wareUserPassword before (having noticed it the first time I looked at the locked version of 42.BIN) but it didn't work. The password has to be padded with an additional 15 spaces to bring it's length up to the full 32 bits. These drives had previously been attached to a 3ware SATA raid controller which locks them upon incorporation into the array and that lock persists if the drives are not properly removed from the array. Like what happens when a server is shutdown, sitting on a shelf for 3 years, ravaged for parts (including the sata raid controller, and then give away.

Some articles/messages that come up when 3wareUserPassword is including in the search terms:

https://www.3ware.com/3warekb/article.aspx?id=13502
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-ide/msg38500.html
http://markmail.org/message/v7emi4oa5vuy7toz

I hope that helps someone. As an additional note, I still needed to use the MHDD tool to "unlock" and then "dispwd". The three links above reference a different tool usable directly from windows or linux. The bios presents a disk password prompt but doesn't accept the space padded password.

I have an Emachines 727. On start up I see message:
primary master WDC WD2500BEVT-22A23Lock
I got 3 tries then it takes me to a 2nd screen:
Enter Unlock password Key:92911744?

Please an someone help me figure out what the password is?
I have been trying MHDD but once I run the dumps, it says:
LINE 11: CHECKDRQ
ERROR: No DRQ
This is for all three dumps, so I am confused here?

or

43240544

I doubt it will work but who knows... (passwords for fujitsu, hp, samsung system etc, not for acer originally)
