What OS are you using? Is this error displayed by the application, or by the OS itself? Can data be transferred and opened on a different workstation? You have not given much info to go on im afraid.

  • Make a copy of all files about which you care onto an external disk.
  • Be sure to disconnect it safely through Windows tools
  • Connect that drive to another computer.
  • Verify if you have any problems opening these files.
  • If there are no problems, rebuild the original workstation and use a new hard drive as a precaution.
  • If you have problems on another workstation, you may have internal file corruption and it may be too late.

No guys, this is caused by a very recent virus.

See here: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/showthread.php?t=226136

I've also got such a case in from a customer. Still looking into it.

Best regards,

Dobre

Does this virus damage the file integrity?

It replaces all word files with a copy that only contains "File error 22001".

Thats all i know for the moment.

Hmmm... For network servers with shadow copies enabled, I would try the "Previous Versions" trick.

Of course, Microsoft in its infinite wisdom does not enable it for local files, so it won't work on XP machines that do not store documents on a network share.

I'd like to get a copy of this malware and run it on my test set of data in a vmware sandbox so I can figure out a solution to it. :)
