One of these 300gb Barracuda drives came in today.
On first inspection it appeard to be dead.
Further investigation showed it was short circuit on the 12vdc rail.
In fact it was an easy fix as the as the diode type component between the 12v molex type connector and ground had short circuited.
When replaced the drive was working and the data was able to be recovered.
All is good!

The bad side of this story was the drive had previously been sent to an OnTrack lab.
OnTrack had quoted £1000 ($2000) to recover the data.
The customer had declined the offer and came to us. :good:

Frankly, I do not think Ontrak is going to learn anything from this... I just do not see how, and I doubt that they really have to :)

Also, I do not think Ontrak has anything to do with scam.

Not to offend anyone, just my two cents.

I have a sort of similar problem with the same type drive, except when I plug in the power connector it shuts down the computer. As the computer begins to restart, it shuts down again. I will do this indefinitely as long as the power connector is connected.
I also notice that one of the black, two prong diode, capacitor, or resistor(I assume its one of theses) becomes very, very hot.
Any suggestions on checking this out, and fixing it?

Any help will be appreciated.
