Hi

what is the problem with the drive?
it is not very likely to have FW problems with these drives.

Only G-List and password in kept in f/w on platters on these.

What makes you think there's a f/w problem?

Lightly clicking, it stays Busy then goes to Ready. Attempts to read it result in ABRT in the error register. Replaced the PCB with compatible, no success. Swapped heads, no success. I guess I need to move the ROM? Haven't tried that yet. Is it U12?

Thanks!

Have you tried swapping motors (i.e. platters?)

It's easy to do with Toshiba. We find that many problems are the result of bearing issues and motor speed regulation problems. The drive won't read correctly unless the motor is up to speed.

I really doubt you've got a PCB or ROM problem.

Jon,

Have not tried that. I'll do it. Thanks for your suggestions.

Try heating the underneath of the spindle motor, the silver disk.

Common problem on these series drives.

I never could get that method to work for me, for very long if at all. In fact, one time after heating the bearing, there was lubricant contaminating the chamber.

I've always had much better success swapping motors. Toshibas are the easiest drives for swaps, and the most forgiving!

heating is not a good solution. more heating more damage. change head and swap platter is the most easy way for toshiba..
