Hi all,
does anyone of you know from experience whether the UT165 chip has adaptive information stored within, probably in internal flash or EEPROM? I've got a 16GB stick here with this chip with either suffers from crystal or Ut chip failure - no oscillation on the crystal. Tomorrow I'll take it to the lab and replace the crystal, but if this does not help I'd rather replace the UT chip than recover the data with the Flash Extractor - if it is possible.

There are many variants of the UT165 chip, and while there not "adaptives" as such, a 16Gb device is very likely to have numerous banks of data with a tricky mix likely. Also the bigger devices tend to ave non-standard page sizes.

A crystal change is definitely the first step. Hope it goes well.

That's why my first try will be to replace the crystal. My question, to make it a bit clearer, was if it would work to swap the UT chip from another stick. Depending on the information probably stored in the chip (and not in the flash) it would work with any other -L48 chip, or only with one from an other 16GB stick with the same flash chip, or not.
The flash does not have a part number, it's as double as thick as a TSSOP package, but has the same pinout. Whatever these chips are called, but I assume there are two dies stacked on top of each other in there.

Well, to be honest not had fantastic success with controller transplants. The hardest thing is to find a controller EXACTLY the same. My failure rate with Flash Extractor is minimal, nearly always get the job done!

These "piggy-back" chips are read in the same way as normal, but will have multiple banks, probably 4.

Thanks, I'll desolder the flash when I have no success with the crystal and read it with flash extractor.

Now I'm copying the customers data off the stick.
The crystal was good, another new 12.0MHz crystal did not work either. But with an external 12MHz source applied to the input pin of the inverter-type oscillator the stick showed up and works. Maybe a failure of the UT chip, I don't care much, repairing pen drives for money is definitvely out of scope.
