So i have been using a PNY CS1111 480GB SSD for about 4 years in my toshiba laptop. About a week ago the computer stopped booting. I removed the drive and plugged it in to my new Dell computer externally with a SATA to USB 3.0 cable and it is recognized and all the system folders (Program Files, Users, ETC.) show up but when i try to open a folder or file it freezes and disconnects. Even when i try to right click on a folder it freezes and disconnects.

If i plug in the SSD externally and just let it sit it will stay connected until i try to read anything off of it. It does not go into the common connect/disconnect pattern that SSD's typically do when having issues.

I tried to run a data recovery software on it but as soon as the software starts scanning it, it disconnects. I even tried to use the PNY Drive Utility but when that trys to access the drive it disconnects.

I plugged it in via a powered usb hub and the same issues kept happening.

My main concern is getting my files off it it. I think all i need to do is copy the "Users" folder and i will be able to recover my important data.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!

Well I'm not sure if you still need any insight on this but it does sound like either weak cells (bad sectors) on the SSD that the controller can't deal with or a electrical issue not giving the drive enough power. In both cases a specialist will have to take a look at it. If you do want to try out some DIY you should know there are risks involved including losing the data forever. Here on the forum there is fzabkar who seems to be the resident expert on electrical issues and he might help you out.
