SSD hard drive stopped working - need advice

June 15th, 2018, 13:36

Hi,

I'm using Debian on a 500GB SSD disk. This disk is ok.

I've a second SSD disk that was laying around: Intel SSD 400GB. This disk is the problem.
Yesterday, I formatted and partitioned it with only one LUKS + ext4 partition.
Then, I used rsync to backup some data from my 500GB SSD disk into this 400GB SSD disk.
But, after about 5 minutes rsync gave me an error: "read-only file system (30)"
I started the backup process again and again the same happened.

Next, I ran:
cat /proc/mounts
and
cat /etc/mtab
and the luks partition appeared mounted as read only

At first I thought it was some connection problem and tried changing the sata and power cable, but no luck.
Tried to boot the same two disks on another machine, and I couldn't boot at all, and my screen was filled with errors like:

Loading, please wait...
[ 32.868100] ata4: SError command READ DMA
[ 32.868139] ata4.00: failed command: READ DMA
[ 32.868174] ata4.00: cmd c8/00:01:00 ..................... tag dma 512
[ 32.868174] res 40/00:00 ........................... Emask 0x54
ATA bus error
[ 32.868228] ata4.00: status: DRDY
[ 34.662679] ata4.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)

And I couldn't boot.
In fact, I had to disconnect the 400GB SSD in order to boot my system.

And if I try to connect it with and USB adapter, nothing happens; it doesn't show up on Disks; it's like it is dead, apart the USB adapter lights turn on.

That means I can no longer check whats wrong with this disk.

So, I would like to ask for your help.
What should I do?

Is there some CD or DVD with some tools I can boot up with, in order to check this 400 SSD disk?

Or is it dead and should I just throw it away?

Check out MHDD in the software section of the forum.

Thank you.
I've tried MHDD and found out that my disk didn't appear listed.

So, I've checked my BIOS and it didn't show up there also.
Then, I've tried in another computer and it didn't show up in its bios either.

Now, I'm stuck.
Is there any solution for when a disk doesn't show up in bios?..

Yes, that would be the normal solution, but in this case, I believe the cost would be superior than purchasing a new 400GB SSD disk, which is around 100 euros.

And, I didn't loose any data because that which was inside it, I have it in another disk, so no harm done.

Thanks anyway.

What is the status register in MHDD when you attached the drive and try detecting it?

Unfortunatelly, until this moment, I was unable to detect it.
It simply doesn't show up in MHDD.
I understand that my MHDD CD-ROM is set with autodetect false, but I didn't find out yet how to turn it on while it's running.

Have to put BIOS in legacy mode to detect drives.

Hi, I'm interested if you could finally fix the problem.

Thank you
