Completely Dead Hynix NVME SSD. I used DDI SSD add on but no joy getting an id of the drive. Might be that minor components failed. Not sure how to proceed from here. Any input would be great were to get started. High res. scan attached

I would measure V1-V5 and the voltage across the TVS diode.

I haven't been able to find a datasheet for the SM6741 PMIC, but the SM6742 appears to be similar.

The PIC microcontroller appears to control the SM6741 IC.

I'm a little confused by the 3.3V measurement at V1. Are you saying that there is 3.3V at one end of the inductor and 0.7V at the other end? If so, then the inductor must be open circuit. If instead you mean that pin #8 (Vin) of the "SLO" chip is +3.3V, then that would be as expected. However, Vout = 0.7V does seem a little low ??

Also, the EN-able pin (#1) just barely exceeds the minimum VIH spec of 1V. Therefore ISTM that this pin is not receiving the correct voltage. Can you measure any continuity between pin #1 and the V5 or V3 inductors? If not, would you be able to determine the source of the EN signal? Could it be coming from the PIC micro?

Could you measure the voltage at pin #4 (FB) of the SLO chip? It should be 0.45V.

Pin #6 is the Power Good pin. It's not clear whether this pin is connected. If it is connected, then PG should be high if Vout is good, or low if Vout is below spec.

Well quick update. SSD is now showing in DDI PCIe add on and I am able to image it. Drive is in very bad shape and stalls every 3 min but data is coming off. The 0.7 confused me a bit as well but it seems to be working now. For all on here throwing in advise I am very thankful. I would like to better understand the components can anybody recommend a book or resource for ssd drives. Happy to learn but not sure where to start.

Also it seems this one is bit locker encrypted and wasn't mentioned.

In the interests of "better understanding", it may be instructive to measure those voltages again after the recovery is complete. There may be an electrical reason why imaging is slow.

As for books, I'm not aware of any of the type you are asking for. Sorry.

No imaging is spot on at 150mb/s but cuts out every 3min with bad blocks. 500Gb imaged with less than 0.2% not readable. I am happy with that. Still not sure what happened to the drive, controller got quite hot around 50 degrees but not over heating.

I'd still be interested in the voltage readings for the "SLO" IC. I'm wondering if there is something special about the LAMD/hynix controllers.

I will do that shortly and update the values. To be fair it is the first Hynix I got in. Can you use the pictures above and mark the points you would like to get measured? Happy to do that.

Post subject:  Re: Hynix NVME SSD dead

Thanks. I would be grateful for the voltages at each of the 8 pins of the SLO chip. Can you also confirm your previous readings at V1-V5?

ISTM that 1.1V might be expected for the two (?) Vcore supplies, while 1.2V could be the SDRAM supply, and 1.8V would be for the NANDs. But 0.7V is an odd one. :? :?

FWIW, I notice that SK hynix SSDs are used in Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 and 3 products. The controller in those cases is a Link A Media LM87800AA. Link_A_Media was acquired by SK hynix and is now known as "SK hynix memory solutions".

Therefore I would expect that your SSD's SH88800AA controller is probably an LAMD part.

Review SSD SK hynix CANVAS SC300A 128GB:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?strip=1&q=cache:www.hw4all.com/review-ssd-sk-hynix-canvas-sc300a-128gb/

Quote:
As discussed earlier SK hynix CANVAS SL308 as a controller chip acts SK hynix SH87820BB, which is a re-mark model Link A Media (LAMD) LM87800AA. In this case, the controller uses SK hynix SH87810AA, which includes two ARM Cortex-R4 cores operating at a frequency of 333 MHz.

Just for completeness, the TVS diode is a 3.3V part.

nicoalbrecht,

Hi

may i ask how did you get your pc3000 nvme up and running again?
i saw a post from 2018 that you did get your disk running again

the disk is exactly same as mine pc3000 512gb
