Post subject:  power problem ADATA SU900

I have disk ADATA SU900. Customer said that was some power issue with computer and after that two disks from computer stopped working. One of them is SU900. So at the moment disk when I connect to PC3000 then I have only BSY state which little blink strong green with bright green.
Another symptom is when I connected disk using USB convener when sometimes disk is recognized in windows and showing partitions. But after about 1-2 seconds disappeared. Using USB: controller and another some component are very hot. When I connected disk only to sata then isn't so hot .

Could you help me where I should find problem?

@lasek, the voltage test points have already been dotted and circled for you (thank you Adata). Can you measure these?

Also measure the +5V supplies produced by your PC3000 card and USB "convener". Presumably your PC3000 card reports the current draw (as already stated by @arvika). Note that the PSUs which are supplied with USB enclosures are often poorly regulated. In your case the SSD draws no current from the +12V supply, so the +5V rail of a dual-voltage PSU may be significantly higher than 5.0V

The only chips whose markings I can see (from an alternative source) are U10 and U3. U3 is a protection device. It should have protected the SSD from overvoltages or reverse voltages. :?

The controller is a Silicon Motion SM2258H-AB.

Can you tell me the markings on the remaining Ux ICs?

Thank you. At the beginning my PC-3000 show disk in BSy state with blinking now show only error.

I measured some points. In each points current is not constant and changing.


    Can you tell me the markings on the remaining Ux ICs?

@lasek, IIUC, PC3000 monitors the current (amps or milliamps) drawn from the +5V and +12V supplies on the PC3K card.

I don't understand why the voltages are not constant. Is the +5V supply also cycling on and off?

By "Ux ICs" I mean U3 - U10.

I have PC-3000 UDMA I'm not sure that I can monitor current. I will check later.

On Vin I have 5V but on Vout I have only about 0,3V. Also now I have different value then I measure before.
I Have to take good photos to check name U3 and U10.

The EK part (U3, MP5016) is configured with a 2.5A current limit. ISTM that this current limit is being reached by the circuit, thereby causing U3 to shutdown. I would measure the resistances between ground and each of the marked voltage test points.

IIUC, U6 should be generating a 1.5V supply. If the output is rising to 2.1V, then it would appear that this regulator may be faulty. Your resistance measurements should help to narrow down the fault.

I don't recognise the "130 TI" parts, but other SSDs have an MP2147 in this position, albeit with a different pin count.

Measure the resistances of the bypass capacitors (inside rounded white rectangles) on the underside of the controller and SDRAM.

I would focus on U3 and U6. I would determine whether the output of U6 (+1.5V) connects to the controller or SDRAM or both. To this end I would test for continuity between the +1.5V test point and each of the aforementioned bypass capacitors.

On test point near U6 element current is not constant and changing between 0,1-1,6V also on out point U6 elements is the same. U6 element is marked AZ 75.
Also I test PCB using freeze spray. The hottest and first places is U6 and U3.

If the output at U6 is cycling between 0 and 1.5V, then it would appear that it is working correctly. However, this behaviour is difficult to see with a multimeter (originally you measured 2.1V, now you have 1.6V). Your first post would suggest that the flash controller is the culprit, assuming that the voltage is indeed 1.5V, not higher.

If we assume that U6 is working correctly, then we need to find which component is responsible for the current overload which is causing U3 to shut down. To this end you need to find which of the abovementioned bypass capacitors is connected to the 1.5V test point.
