SSD - power surge

Hi,

I had a power surge, and now the comuter can not load the OS from it, and there is no access to SSD
I tried to connect it externally via USB and nothing shows up

do I have to spend $$$ to get it fixed or can I do somthing by my self ?

its a SP S60 120GB

Probably the PCB got fried as well.
I think a good and knowledge electronic guy can fix it for you.

I can not see or smell any sign of burn, does it mean anything ?

I opened the case
and I have connected to power while open
there are 2 red LEDs on (the LEDs were not visible when the case was closed)

Drive could been entered "panic mode" and the firmware benn corrupted.
If data is critical take the drive to a data recovery Company near you.
This one has a Marvell controller, so should be recoverable even for chip-off

that something logically got corrupted ?!
you think that something like that can happen from A power surge ?
and it is not something phisically ?

depends on what part number Phison it is. is it PS3108-S8 (Phison S8)? If so, yes should be recoverable easily by Chip off method.

There is a professional review from Tweaktown that states that SP recently (12/2014) changed the internal controller from Sandforce to a Phison.

Right now the list of supported models includes the following cpu modifications:

Phison PS3105 (all modifications and all models);
Phison PS3108-S8 (all modifications and all models);

Toshiba TC58NC1000 (all modifications and all models);

It doesn’t matter which manufacturer produced your SSD. If your model is based on PS3105, PS3108, PS3109, PS3110 or PS3111 it will be completely supported.

I would locate a DR shop which can recover your data without chip-off. Chip-off should only be a last resort.

In the state the drive is in you should find a local data recovery company (near the Good Place you live in ), as it is a chance that they can work with the drive without chip-off...and get your info out. But don't mess with the drive yourself, it can only get worse. For working with the firmware you'll need the right tools and knowledge, one thing wrong and the drive is bricked.

Better recover data via controller, result will be better than chip-off. Assembling algorithm for this controller is not perfect so chip-off could give little worse result. But sometimes it is only solution if working with FW is not possible.
