Formatted SD Card - can images and videos be recovered?

December 15th, 2018, 7:35

Hi.

My daughter accidentally formatted her camera's SD card, and I'm now trying to recover 2 year's worth of pictures and videos. I have used Recuva (free version) and have managed to recover 2000+ items. Most of the images are recovered, though a number are corrupt. None of the videos (mp4) will run. Any suggestions regarding a methodology/software that might help, or a recommendation for a good data recovery service?

Thanks,

Pete.

Clone the card, sector by sector, to an image file on your HDD. Then run tools such as PhotoRec (freeware) or Klennet Carver (commercial) against the cloned image.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The camera is a Cannon SLR, the card was formatted using the camera function, and no further data was added after the format.

Which Canon exactly? and what size is the card? (that tells us the file system).. They are usually recoverable (it is a quick format in Canon as you have seen with the photos), but the format creates a new DCIM which overwrites the old one and makes recovery more difficult, and fragmentation more likely.

It's a Canon 80D, the SD card is 128Gb SanDisk.

Ok, so ExFAT and 1080 HD vids. Probably out of our current software versions capabilities (I hope our 2019 versions to be able to handle). We would probably need the card in our lab to recover the videos manually from the hex as its a complex case. DM me if you'd like a quote, otherwise some video repair tools/options may work as mentioned, but I think we would be better to recover correctly from the source.
