Hello all. I am new to the site and wanted to get some opinions and/or suggestions on some SSD models for my laptop. I am looking at getting an SSD in the range of 500GB-1TB. I found a few I like and wanted some opinions on them. I've been doing some research on SSD's and the tech behind them. Found out about the different types of NAND flash such as SLC, MLC, and TLC. From reading about it, I gathered that SLC is best, MLC is second best, and TLC is least best. I narrowed my choices down to the the following SSDs but the information I've managed to find on the manufactures' website relating to their specs is not clear on which is NAND type is used.

The Samsung 860 Evo 1TB 2.5" was available prior to Christmas for AU$175 (after cashback). That's about US$125. Did you exclude Samsung on the basis of price, or for some other reason?

Thanks for the recommendation. Do you know if this drive is SLC, MLC or TLC? I had not considered Samsung. No particular reason.

The 860 Evo uses TLC V-NAND, but with 30nm lithography, so it has much greater endurance than earlier TLC tech:

Just found out my laptop can accommodate a M.2 SSD. I can see on the motherboard where it would go but I'm not sure which M.2 drive to buy? How can I find out which size and storage capacity my laptop supports?

My laptop is an HP EliteBook 840 Gen 2

Thanks for this. Upon further research, I found that my laptop supports a M.2 SSD 2260 PCIe 2x2 with a max of 512GB. Checking prices, the M.2 form factor SSDs are way more expensive than the 2.5” ones. Comparing the difference in speed, it’s not much between the PCIe 2x2 and the SATAIII. If what I’ve found is correct, then it’s better to go with a 2.5” SSD instead of a M.2. I can get a 1TB 2.5” SSD which my laptop supports, where as with the M.2 SSD my laptop will only support up to 512GB.

Also found that there’s not that many M.2 2260 out there. I guess this is why the prices are so high. Supply and Demand. I found this one on Newegg. Too much $$$
