Replacing recovery partition on android emmc chip

I've got xiomi redmi 5 with stock rom and all settings. It won't boot but it will boot into recovery mode. Stock recovery mode is however useless - it won't let you backup data - you can just hard reset phone

I pulled out EMMC chip and was able to pull all the raw data. Unfortunately userdata partition is encrypted.

My question is therefore - Can I do following steps to recover data:
1. Replace default miui recovery partition with twrp directly on EMMC
2. Put chip back into the phone
3. Boot into twrp
4. Back up user data with twrp

Will that work or the phone will prevent me from doing so?
