 Post subject: When to use soft reset vs hard reset?

Looking through the manual, when should I send a drive a soft reset vs a hard reset? Is there an ELI5 version of what the SRST bit is in relation to "drive interface circuit?"

There is no specific rule. Matter of fact, besides obviously the surface condition, it is more drive model/family related. You will see trends of specific drive behavior, which typically will result in more or less specific imaging parameter settings. The default settings in general are a good start.
