Post subject:  WD10JMVW missing ROM

hi.
i have this drive (1TB USB)
WD10JMVW-11AJGS1
DCX: 0A1TJB9GE
DCM: EBKT2HB
DATE : 23 JUL 2016
(PCB no.771961)

drive was sent to another recovery center and returned back because client did not agree to his recovery cost.
When i got the drive the original ROM was not present (removed) from the PCB.
When asked about this, he claims that the ic was burnt and got broken into pieces while removing it.( )

i have used pcb no 771951 to convert it to SATA , drive spins up without clicking .
trying available resources from files section to generate rom.
any help appreciated
thanks

I'm pretty sure this family doesn't include a copy of ROM in the service area, so rebuilding it out of the question.

However, if you can find the same model drive built the same day or within a few days, the adaptives are usually close enough to work.

It's an FBlite drive, so has unique module in ROM :-(

The story about the ROM being burned sounds like BS to me.

I'd suggest he contact the other data recovery center requesting the missing ROM.

Agree, if they have quoted a cost then I'd guess it's almost certain that they thought it would be recoverable and so would have the ROM.

Pepe has done some work on rebuilding rom when it's missing from some of the wd drives.

Could be worth sending a pm

Agreed; these have "unique" mod 4F so it's a PITA to recover.
It should still be doable but certainly not easy (ergo, not cheap).
Best option, make them give you original ROM.
If not, it's bad news :(

according to the client, the drive when connected was asking to be formatted.
when the quote for recovery was not accepted , the drive was returned back(without ROM)
when asked about the ROM, he gives a picture of a burnt out 8 pin broken ic , and justifies that was how it was originally.
(obviously a fat lie..)
sadly for the client , she has to go back to him if she needs the data . :(

as client is not inclined to spend much, i wont be able to help her further

hope this has a better ending eventually.

Thanks all, for your inputs

rebuilding the ROM is in my opinion only 1 of your problem (can be done but its a PITA as already mentioned above)
the previous DR might have backed up the original SA - with "all unique mods" - and sabotaged them too
and @ the same time also taken a full clone of the drive and wiped out the drive too

because if you going down that path (sabotaging clients drives for rejecting the quote) you don't/can't know where it stops

True @ jermy
there is no way to know how deranged minds work to make others life miserable(not that data recovery was any easy before)..

still hope better sense prevails and client gets the data back at reasonable cost.
Thanks

Maybe we should start compiling a list of business / firms that do this sort of action ....

I started such a list in the secrets section of my forum. But, posting such a list publically I suspect will lead to more problems (such as accusations of libel and slander) than it'll do any good.

But, I agree that such companies deserve to be shamed.

@sathyan if you post the serial number of your drive here, perhaps a few of us can provide some ROM codes we've collected from drives with close serial numbers. Perhaps, you'll get lucky and find one that's close enough to work.

Sadly, clients who tend to look for easier(cheaper)options , will go looking for such places(With their v important data)

Once i get the info of that "pro" and i will circulate in our Whatsapp circle(dealers n vendors) so they can be aware ..
but you cant reach all clients/end users..

Thanks
