I'm testing the latest version of DE which has a nice compressed image format. In the mostly empty space it seems to have no issue compressing and copying at 120Mb/s, but in the full areas the speed is dropping to more like 50-60Mb/s. I don't know if this speed drop is just a limitation of the software or if it's related to my sub-par i5 CPU. I do see that it's hitting around 95% utilization but not quite maxing out. Anyone out there have a monster 10+ core CPU and PC-3000 who can test what speed they get using the compression? I'm just wondering if it's worth upgrading to something like a Ryzen Threadripper to be able to utilize this compression. I'd just hate to drop $2K just to get the same result. |

To me, the 2GB compressed file chunks it makes are risky if something goes wrong. I won't be using it. |

My current CPU is i5-4590 running at stock 3.3Ghz. 32Gb of RAM. Up until now, CPU has never been an issue since data recovery isn't usually very processor intensive. But, trying to compress entire HDDs now is a new trick. I've had my eye on the Gigabyte X399 Gaming 7 motherboard with 5 full size PCIe slots anyway. I'm really just hoping to justify the cost to myself. Even if someone with a hyperthreaded i7 can run the test for me and show that it's faster will probably convince me it's worth upgrading. |

I store everything on a RAID 6 array, so I'm not concerned about things like bad sectors too much. But, yeah, I want to thoroughly test this out before starting to really implement it. |
