From what I know you can read rom with external programmer, manually edit headmap in rom and than write back to rom chip.

I attached a rom file for HTS541075A9E680 so you can compare and see where headmap should be 00 01 02 03 0F 0F 0F ...

may i ask you? what is the best way to find a good donor for heads ? iv matched the Model Number , Part Number,MLC and same year and country of production! but the donor has 3 heads instead of 4 !
and more worse when i back the heards to the donor i get DRD status

please let me know your opinion

I usually match donor visually and try a few until I find a working one, if I have them in the shop. If I am to order a donor I take into consideration the matching rules on here:

https://www.donordrives.com/blog/matching-guide

It should have the same number of heads to be able to read all data.

First you should inspect original heads under microscope for contamination / scratches / bents / condition of the flaps etc.

If magnetic dust is present on one of the heads you should try to clean it, install back, spin the drive a couple of times than remove and inspect again.

If needed platters should also have to be removed and inspected for media damage.

Only if condition of the drive is assest as acceptable you should install donor heads. Otherwise you may ruin them for nothing, which I don't do.

If your donor drive cannot start ok after moving back in donor heads it could mean donor heads just got ruined by the patient drive or you could have damaged them while swapping due to lack of experience.

I've tried a few times to cut heads, but without much success, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, not something very appealing to me, considering the fact that the customers I encountered don't like partial recoveries like this.

If you have a donor candidate and not sure if compatible, just pull hda from both donor and patient, inspect visually, compare them and if they look the same give it a try. It will only takes a few minutes to find the answer. Good luck.

Sir you was Right! iv inspected the platters ^^ two plattes has scratches ! i suppose they destroyed the healthy heads of my first donor!

if i cut the heads of new donor "the heads on the scratches side of the platter" with a scissors... and change the headmap in ram
will the remaining heads be functional?

ever had a case like this? could you recover some data?
