Hi,
I have this WD1200BB, when I got this drive it just knocked and I couldn't read out anything from the PCB.
So I got a new PCB (same number), desolder and resolder the ROM, checked the ROM in Safemode and now the ROM is readable.
Hocked it up to pc3000 and got DRD, DSC...started the Wd-Utillity, did autodetect and every thing maps up fine, except for serial and size....klicked on tools and then Drive-ID...size comes up fine, but still no serial.
Then I tryed DE to get the data out, but the drive auto shuts down when it almost reach the point to enter the DE tool.

I read the modules, all are okey except for 2F SMART log (reserved)

Anyone have a clue how to make this drive readable?

Hi Bosse,

Did you try the head check?

My guess is one of the heads is bad.

Best regards,

Dobre

Hi Dobre, you were right.
Did a check and head 5 is gone
Is there any chance to read out the other 5 heads?

Sure,
Leave WD utility open, Ctrl-Tab to main screen, launch DE.
Create new task in DE(if drive hangs - uncheck SW and HW resets and Read drive ID).
Go to task params->headmap. Create a headmap using active utility and uncheck Head5. Then image the drive.

In the last picture, why is the capacity changed ? And moreover, why the S/N is not shown also ? :( .

Oh, yes indeed. Didn't notice that.
Your ROM is not original!

Hi, yes the ROM is original...just physicly moved the chip from one PCB to another.
And to quote my self:
"did autodetect and every thing maps up fine, except for serial and size....klicked on tools and then Drive-ID...size comes up fine, but still no serial"

No, it's not.
FW version 17.07W16 is a clear sign of it.
It should be 17.07W17.
Maybe you swapped the wrong chip? :)

Maverick family has 40-pin parallel flash ROM - M29F10xxx.
8-pin chip on these PCBs is not ROM.

Also, there is no need in manually swapping ROM chip.
Just try different ROM versions from your database(from drives with 17.07W17 firmware). You may also need to play with headmap.

Hi and thanks for all your replyes,
The problem is now solved, see the attached picture...the FW on this drive was 16.06V16.
After much struggle with this drive I was able to read out the original FW.
So now the drive is cloned and ready to work further with.

Regards/ Bosse

Hi,Starling :)
you are a expert on hardware and software recovering in WD :good: ,i guess.so i have a question which confused me long.
in the case above ,you instructed mr_spokk to "Create a headmap using active utility ",that is the core(i mean "using active utility" in DE settings) i dont understand at all, could you explain to me in detail that how to grasp its meaning and apply its functions properly in practice? maybe too much to ask for.....

Sincerely
coolmac

Hi coolmac, as Starling put it: Go to task params->headmap. Create a headmap using active utility and uncheck Head5.
What he ment was (I'll think :) ), if I had a head problem (head 5) I could image the drive by deactivating head 5 in DE utility by pressing the menu, Task Parameters, the go to Headmap, and then create a new headmap without head 5 by disable it.

Regards

Bosse

Question, does this allows you to reuse the hardrive normally ? Once everything is done ?

Take their training and actively read their forums.

I don't want to discourage you but, frankly, there is no easy way to learn the PC3000 other than a) asking for support from the technical staff on a case-by-case basis, or b) paying the money for their training classes (not cheap). As far as learning from the manuals is concerned, be prepared for your eyes to cross and your brain to go numb in short order. They are extremely dense and difficult to understand because of Russian-to-English translation issues. A thorough re-work of the translation would make a huge difference but I don't see that happening. In the meantime, sit down with the manual and the problem drive and go through the steps as best you understand. If you've purchased a legitimate copy then you will find the support quite good. After you've used it for a period of time it will begin to make sense to you. There really is no shortcut on the learning curve.
