Post subject:  WD2000 and WD2500 head transplant succes rate

Hi Friends,

Just wondering, the first time i get some big WD's that need a head transplant.
However, someone told me that the success-rate on these drives is extremely low, about 1 in 8 transplants, even with close matches.
Can someone confirm or deny this?
I'd rather not spend any good drives on these jobs if the success-rates are so low.

Thanks for your replies,

Dobre

Hi Marc,

You're right, there's a very low sucess rate, IMHO for 2 facts, first one is the construction of WD drives and second, is very hard to get a very close match, and even with that, I think no one is absolutely sure what to match in order to get compatible heads.

1) check PCB
2) try to realign the lid
3) try to clean the heads
4) swap the heads

What would be the best method to clean the heads? And when there is no visible damage how could you tell the difference between heads that are dirty and heads that are dead?

Only the EB and BB series have problems - head alignment needed and very difficult (trial and error....)

I don't have any particular difficulties with WD drives.
