Starting in 2009, Seagate will be making some important changes to its limited warranty terms for selected bare drive products.

For products purchased on or after January 3, 2009, the limited warranty period for consumer electronics, notebook and personal storage bare drives sold to Seagate Authorized Distributors will be changed from 5 to 3 years. Seagate believes that the new warranty period and terms better reflect current industry standards.


Seagate enterprise drives and Seagate and Maxtor external retail products that have 5-year warranty periods will not be affected by this change.

I'm hardly surprised! It was an unsustainable business model to maintain a 5 year warranty, while producing such poor quality product. Perhaps they should have reduced it to 3 months judging by some of the new stuff we're seeing!

I hope we can all look forward to a Happy Xmas & New Year full of 7200.11's! Hopefully Santa Claus will be generous and brings lots of nasty hard drives to the world this year!

So Seagate finally realise they produce crap drives. I'm surprised they are prepared to offer a warranty beyond 2 weeks.

My concern now is that Samsung have started manufacturing in China.

From being the best 500GB drive on the planet (HD501LJ) - what's going to happen now?

Maybe we need a new disk manufacturer called SeaSung....

(Or was that an old Neil Diamond song????)

At least their products are real.

I can speak to a dolphin but I'm not quite sure we can understand each other

Basically the article says:
There are a lot of Samsung 501LJ drives with a problem
And the problem is
After 1-3 months of work the HDDs started behave strange - the drives can knock a little during the work and you can even find out bad blocks on a drive. After that the drive dies very quickly (from several hours to several days)

On visual inspection you can see air bubbles under the lid's sticker
If you remove the sticker you can find out there is black dust with particles about 0.05 - 0.1 mm
Same dust was discovered inside HDA which probably causes all the damage

Sergey thinks the drives were produced or transported or stored not like they supposed to be

Nope - never. I think I've only ever had a couple of 501LJs in - but both shorted circuits due to user error.

However, "watch this space" for the new Samsung HD502IJ manufactured in CHINA........

Following the path of Seagate and self-destruction. Why do they do it?

I already received some Samsung HD501LJ with that kind of problem, as they sold a lot that model around here.
In some cases, we had some of those drives knocking, but went ready after a while and I could image it head by head 100%.

What do you mean head by head? you created head mask, or you disabled some heads?
