Hello Friends,

I am trying to quote a customer who does not want the disk opened before a estimate, it's a tough call. I would guess spindle, but maybe its just stiction? The ip current peaks at almost 1A, your can hear the cycle time in the attached recordings.

I have never done one of these disks before, so any advice most welcome.

Thanks again.

It's stiction, but the question with these drives is if there is any more damage. alot of times these drives like to die really bad.

I agree, stuck heads. However, I always quote these drives with a head change in mind. Most of the time, the heads dig in really bad. They usually damage the media surface and untrustworthy once they are freed up.

Stiction; it is not uncommon for the stiction to have been caused by somebody with careless disregard continually cycling and generally messing around with an already failed drive. Obviously you should not commit to anything definite until they allow you to strip down the drive.

We have a standard letter that we send out to customer's who have had their device opened, even where they decline to proceed with the quote which normally sorts out warranty issues if that is what has your customer concerned?
