hi all
just looking for abit of advise please,

we recieved a drive mk8046gsx which has been to another DR company first,
drive was clicking and not getting ready, we replaced the heads, now the drive will power up, show correct capacity, show f/w as the label on the drive and show serial number

however he serail number on the label and the serial number displayed by pc3000 are not the same,

drive is showing it is locked and trying to unlock drive repsons daying it is not locked

i am suspecting a different board has been returned with the drive, i also suspect drive has been opened as lable has been detached from the drive, so this is in short an extremely messy drive.

Thank you in advance for all your help

ATTENTION!

Sounds like either the wrong lid has been put on it, or it's the wrong PCB.

Any way to find out the original s/n?

The warranty check should give you an idea of the manufacture date.

Toshiba warranty status checker:
http://216.102.195.13/gcs/toshiba/

The Year/Week date codes on the ICs (YWW or YYWW) should reflect the manufacture date of the PCB, and would probably closely match the manufacture date of the HD.

Looks to me that the drive do accept the SUPER ON - OK and you can access zone table, etc so i would say ATA password doesn't lock you out of Toshiba VSC set.

Now you can't read the G-List that is stored on the platters as you have ID not found and Address Marker problem.

When you try to remove password you get abort because of bad block.

G-List, Password, P-List, etc is stored on platter.

Looks like that you can access to the CPs on ROM but NOT to the platter data.

I would say the drive have bad head(s) / pre-amp.

On those Toshiba the "unlock password" option just sends a special command to the drive and that command makes the drive re-set the secuirity sector on platter - "S".

That sector contains ATA password (encoded) and flag that determines if drive is locked or not.

If you clear that sector you will end up with locked drive. If that sector can't be read you will end up with locked drive.

My take is that PC-3000 did issue the command to attempt to re-create that sector with a default one (without password set that unlocked the drive) but the drive reported Bad Block back as that sector can't be written.

So you either have bad sectors on SA or the full SA data on platter can't be accessed.

Because you can't gain access to G-List that is stored on platter as well my take is that you either have a huge "ring" of damage on the platter on the SA zone or the heads are gone and aren't reading SA on the platter at all making the drive apear as "locked"...

You are using the GSY utility, a disk GSYN.
Therefore the modules GLIST, smart etc. can be on other coordinates

I would expect that PC3K would retrieve the G-List using VSC to read G-List instead of reading physical coordinates. Same to clar password.

I would expect that PC-3000 would issue the VSC to tell the drive to generate a new fresh "S" sector rather then reading the S sector and replace it with a copy from unlocked drive or standard S sector ....

Even if this is the case, the commands for reading Glist may differ in the parameters
Therefore the command with the wrong parameters (hard-coded in the utility) will return an error
for the inappropriate family.

in pc3000 there is an option to save the sector with a password and restore it.
Therefore, it is not the fact that regeneration is used.

I would start by sending Super On + VSC to re-generate "S". If drive does return Bad Block error and ABORT then something is wrong with writting to that sector.

One could try to read platter by tracks and see if it's possible to read something at all.

One can test to read CPs from ROM but i'm almost sure they will read just fine.

The command for reading the G-list is the same for both models , but the SC value is diffrent. So the drive reject the command and put 20h in the error register.

Yes, but if you send the command to re-create "S" it should be the same for both drives and you don't have to specify any Sector Size like on the G-List that might have diferent sizes for diferent models.
