Thinking of buying a basic SoHo NAS.

What is the safest type of RAID to use for a two disk
NAS ( 2 x S-ATA 500).

There seems to be an awful lot of proprietary raid types
out there e.g. Drobo Beyond Raid, Synology Hybrid RAID.

Should I just use the RAID that comes pre-configured on the
NAS or reset it and use a more conventional RAID setup?

Safest would be RAID 1, of course

IMHO you sould use the pre-configured seeting. It's always easier that way in case of DR but some seetings really depends on the data you'll write on so...
Anaway, the best is always to know (note somewhere on paper) the seetings you're using.

I think you shouldn't sacrifice performance for recovery potential in case of failure. From a recovery point of view it would be easier, but for the client who wants a good performing server performance is very important. Backups are also very important, but so is the peace of mind that in the event of a serious media failure a professional company offering a professional service will have the experience and capabilities to deal with the situation, regardless of the setup.

If a service is being offered by a company that are not capable of dealing with such a problem then it can be outsourced to somebody who can handle it.
