It seems that I am not able to send commands to the diag console. Hitting "." or ":" should get some feedback from the device, but nothing happens. My RS-232/TTL is working, double checked with 2 SATA devices.

This is all I get after powering on the hdd, so receiving works:
Code:
Reset
4096k x 16 DRAM
NHAWK - 1_Disk    S-42   03-27-07_13:01

Buzz HM SFI
!
(P)PATA Reset
Master
(S)PATA Reset
Master

pins I use:
Code:
+---------+---------+-------
|   PWR   | . T . G | ....
| ° ° ° ° | . R . G | ....
+---------+---------+-------
T - TX
R - RX
G - GND

I jumpered G to get the device configured as Master and also use at as GND. Every help is appreciated.

Try "Ctrl-Z" first to get a "T>" prompt

This was the first thing I tried. Any other ideas?

The code you display means that terminal communicates with your drive. If hitting CTRL+Z does not get you a prompt then maybe something gone bad internally. I think preamp controlls this signals. Does the drive click?

I did not notice any clicks and the problem applies to 2 drives. The above one and another with also stops interacting with me after I received
Code:
Reset
4096k x 16 DRAM
GALAXY - 1_Disk    S-6D   09-22-06_15:48
HM SFI
!
(P)PATA Reset
Master
(S)PATA Reset
Master

I have tested both scanned both drives with MHDD, and everything looks fine to me.

Oho, I just got an idea what I did wrong, if it is true... I'll hammer my head against my table so hard, that there will be no morning...

Well, at least you think you found out what was wrong. Please, let us know here, if possible. I am facing something very similar. I connect to the drive (hyperterminal, COM3) but I don't seem to have a prompt to edit any info. When I leave the connection, I have the option to save...
I am just researching the field and I never saw anyone doing any procedure. I am following some manuals and experimenting.
What I think my problem is in my case is I don't have a modem connected to my motherboard (and so who or what's going to translate the data I type?).
I may be wrong but, eh, that's how I can sleep at night.
