How to tell HDD manufacturer from HDD Model?

September 9th, 2012, 5:32

Hello,

I need to determine HDD manufacturer name (Seagate, WDC, Samsung...) and other details from HDD's model name.

Is there any known database for that?

Thanks

Eli

Maybe, but it depends on what exactly you want to find out.

But first, what is the MDL?

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I need it for assorted models. Is there any rule/procedure which input is a model number and the output is manufacturer/brand ?

As far as I know, WD stands for Western Digital, ST stands for Seagate, What are the the letters that stand for (initials) Maxtor, Samsung, Hitachi, etc...?

Thanks

Eli

Ok, now I understand a little better what you are after.

Unfortunately, there is no specific rule. You are on the right track with how you started. For ease you can always run image search online the mdl and that will produce some results for you, though with rare drives that may not be the case.

It's just experience and familiarity with recognizing the models.
