SEAGATE Cheetah 15K.5 ST3300655SS vendor name modification

September 18th, 2012, 9:21

Hi,
I am trying to modify my vendor name of ST3300655SS 15kSAS drives, in order to make them work in an unsupported Xyratex raid controller case. The Xyratex raid controller firmware is looking for a specific vendor name of a harddrive. The manufacturer doesn't support the chasis anymore, and I can not put another Seagate drive without changing the Vendor name.

I have tested some Seagate drives with serial terminal connection. As far as I understand, I have to read the Vendor track to buffer, and then transfer it over serial interface to my computer, then modify VENDOR data, then upload the data over serial, and write the data back to Vendor tracks.

But no experience so far. Do I need a special software, or can I do this just over serial connection.

I have a running hardware, which I don't want to put into trash, just because of no spare parts. Any help would be appreciated.

I need to change the Vendor name of standart Seagate SAS drives.

thanks,
kuban

Board does not allow a user to send PM when registered new :(

The problem is: the drives are not xyratex, then are Autodesk. And Autodesk does not support these older model units anymore. I even can not find spare parts from Autodesk. And xyratex does not sell drives with Autodesk vendor name in behalf of Autodesk. So we are in dead lock, and we don't want to put these unsupported enclosures to trash.

All we need to do is: buy some SAS drives, change vendor name, and use the same old unsupported storage chasis.

I have the same problem. The other solution would be to flash or replace the controllers with vendor blind firmware. Kuban, did you find any solution?
