PCB Compatibility Question

January 16th, 2014, 11:58

I need a board for a Samsung HD103UJ. They seem to be in short supply.....
I have sourced one with a slightly different family, will that work?

Samsung HD103UJ
BF41-00185A
TRINITY 32MB REV 4

I have found a board with the same number, but TRINITY 32MB REV 5, will that work?

The drive is not spinning, but using PC3K I can tell the board is not good.

ISTM that you have posted your question to the wrong forum. That said, what does PC3K tell you about the board?

Have you checked the TVS diodes?

Have you measured the onboard supply voltages (Vcore, Vio, Vneg)? If not, do you need help to do this?

Do you get any output from the serial terminal?

PC3K just remains busy. I took the two TVS diodes off one by one (as explained in the PC3K manual) but this didn't get me access to the drive. I would not know where to start on testing the supply voltages, but I know that you are the absolute guru when it comes to all things electrical :) Anything you can teach me would be much appreciated.

For me most likely ROM is damaged.
Good luck.

It didn't produce a log, which again leads me to believe its a PCB (ROM) issue.

Measure the voltages at the two 4R7 coils. These will be Vcore and Vio.

Then measure the voltage at the anode of the Schottky diode adjacent to the 1R2 coil. The anode is the pin facing toward the inside of the board. That will the negative supply for the preamp.

Did you measure the resistances of the TVS diodes before you removed them? If not, do you still have them, and can you measure their resistances now?

With the Ammeter set at 20k, the resistance of the TVS diodes are 5.20 and 2.06.
Each time I power on the drive, it surges and takes my PC out.......

The two TVS diodes are OK.

Measure the resistances across the 5V and 12V supplies at the drive's SATA power connector. Do this with the board on and off the drive.

Also measure the resistances between the two 4R7 coils and ground, and between the Schottky diode and ground. Perform the latter test with the board on and off the drive.
