I prefer the SalvationData card.

I would affix the card inside a container with screws, spring washers and hex nuts by utilising the screw holes at each end of the 40P connector.

For the container, you might consider gutting a 3.5" floppy drive. You could also remove the DASP Activity LED (IDE pin #39) and reroute it to the floppy drive's LED.

I can do the re-work for you. If you like I will buy the card and rework it and hand it off to you to test.

BTW @chrisfoster, did you have a copy of the Edirol A-6 OS?

Hey that's very generous of you, how about I hand the SP-808EX over to you and you can experiment on it? That way you could determine if the units a fit for you also..

@chrisfoster, could you indulge my curiosity and show us what the Zip's file system looks like? If you connect it to a PC, you may be able to view sector 0 with a disc editor such as DMDE.

The Akai MPC2000 uses a quirky implementation of FAT16. I'm wondering if the SP-808 does something similar.

It doesn't appear that DMDE is suitable for this purpose. Thanks for trying.

Instead I would use HDAT2 (a DOS tool) to dump as much technical info from your Zip drive as you can. This information lists the capabilities and features of your drive and would be available via the Device Info menu. These data can be saved to a file on your source drive (not Zip).

To view the data in a specific sector ...

    type MODE CO80,50 at the DOS prompt (80 columns, 50 lines)
    launch HDAT2
    select your PATAPI Zip drive
    select the COMMANDS menu
    View/Search Device
    screen will show first half of sector 0
    PageDown/PageUp to navigate to next/previous sector
    Type J to jump to a specific sector

Unfortunately the sector data cannot be saved to a file (at least not on my version of HDAT2).

Snarf captures full-screen DOS graphics, even when running under Windows XP. It's a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program that you load before running your application.

I've just confirmed that Snarf works under Win98SE DOS (real DOS mode, not a Windows DOS box).

Use Alt-S to dump the screen contents to a BMP file in your HDAT2 directory.

The attachments show the first 0x200 bytes of sector 2048 of my CD-R disc.

I wonder if the following freeware Windows tool (up to Win2K) could dump the contents of your ZIP drive:

CD2ISO is a simple tool to extract .iso images from your cd or dvd disk. It will read any drive as raw disk, so you can also use it to make a sector dump of a removable drive (cd, dvd or floppy).

Cd2iso works very straight-forward. It will dump raw sectors of a filesystem. You do not need any additional dll files.

CD2ISO will extract _any_ filesystem. Valid iso files are only made of CD images.
But.. CD2ISO can create a dump of a hard drive as well. This is allowed on purpose for you to be as flexible as possible.

I got the version 1 of cd2iso and I also made a win98SE bootable DOS stick, but the issue is that I cant access the disk that is in the drive from win7 explorer/ DOS box: "Cannot determine the number of sectors on this volume" when trying to format.

ZIP is recognized in Device Manager as working properly, visible but not format-able or eject-able in Disk Manager.

cd2iso did an iso dump but it is 0kb

Might be missing a dedicated driver perhaps.

FWIW, I followed rogfanther's suggestion and managed to create an ISO from a DVD using WinImage.

Perhaps you could export the following registry key (or equivalent) to a file:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\SCSI
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SCSI\

I expect that this key will tell us how Windows sees your Zip drive. Go to Start -> Run and type REGEDIT.

What drivers are loading currently in your DOS environment? If none then get some loading and you should be golden..

Its been years since playing around with DOS drivers, but post any problems and I'm sure it will come back in vivid technicolour!
when you click on the more button, scroll to bottom of page for captchya. A bit of a pain but I guess it works...
