Hello,

does somebody have the related dump or the drive that is willing to make a dump please?
I checked Ebay, but there are just complete drives available, not just the enlousure with the USB board.14TB are available though.
In the past I got the 14TB EasyStore enclousure with USB board and managed to get it run with the WD140EFFX (14TB Red Plus) and via WD Formatter to format it in XP compatability, Im able to use the full MFT partition size of 14TB.Recently I got the WD16KRYZ (16TB Gold) to try to get the max supported MFT partition and tried with my spare USB board with 14TB Easystore FW, but the WD Formatter can't even detect the drive, so would like to test the 16TB FW if any luck.Did somebody look closer at the USB board FW? I can provide images from 14TB EasyStore and WD 14TB My Book if interested.

The board is actually same like in most of the 3.5" WD enclousures like EasyStore, My Book, Desktop Elements only with different onboard FW.

again for explanation, the 14TB WD Red works with this USB bridge , that I got from a 14TB EasyStore.
The problem is with a WD 16TB Gold and this USB bridge from a 14TB EasyStore.

check the adapter chip should match INIC-xxxx (regardless of the hdd size)

"WD Formatter can't even detect the drive" connect ur drive alone and access 1st. sector if reads fine if not seek help better

The OP does not have a problem with the new 16TB drive. @Comos just wants to use the new drive with the bridge PCB that came with an older 14TB drive.

@ fzabkar

it should work regardless of the size, only data will be enc. using the format will make new partition
unless the drive have problems or weak heads

@Comos, could you upload your 14TB bridge firmware dump? I suspect that there is a small area that stores the ID of your drive. I seem to recall a thread where @michael_chiklis used a foreign drive with a particular bridge and caused its firmware to be rewritten with the ID of the foreign drive.

It's a brand new hdd, normally works ,can be partitioned, formatted.

Sure, thiis is a complete dump that I made from the physical chip via a programmer. It's from my spare 14TB EasyStore USB board that I got.
I have not compared it with the actual one which I run with the 14TB WD Red, where I was suprosed that it worked from scratch with different WD drive that was in the enclousure, so that ID thing sounds a bit strange. Couldn't be based on the LBA size?

Can you dump the firmware on your working unit and compare the two dumps in a hex editor?

See https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44056

You might like to try that procedure with your spare board first, to make sure that it works.

yes, or try to dump it with this:

https://github.com/smx-smx/ASMTool

If somebody has the toolchain ready, might be good if he can build a x32/x64 binary, I have to setup mine 1st.

There are 4 instances of the WWN - 5000CCA2A3E8A30F01. Is this the same number as is on the label?

There are two USB VID/PID pairs, 0x1058 / 0x25DE and 0x1058 / 0x264D.

0x1058 is WD's USB Vendor ID.

A capacity of 0x065DE00000 sectors differs from the full capacity by 4312240 sectors (= 2.2GB). Does this mean that the USB bridge firmware is reserving the last 2.2GB for its own use?

I should have written that there are 5 instances of the WWN.

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

0001F080  79 F9 4B 4B 10 58 25 DE 01 00 00 00 4B 50 00 CC  ..KK........KP..
                      ^^^^^ +++++                ^^^^^^^^
                      VID    PID                  WWN

0001F090  A2 A3 E8 A3 0F 01 50 00 CC A2 A3 E8 A3 0F 01 50  ................
          ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ -------------------------- **
0001F0A0  00 CC A2 A3 E8 A3 0F 01 50 00 CC A2 A3 E8 A3 0F  ................

0001F0B0  01 50 00 CC A2 A3 E8 A3 0F 01 00 00 01 00 00 00  ................
          == ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also I'm wondering if the following is reporting the physical sector size, 0x200 (= 512) bytes.

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

0000F100  FF E8 4B 4B 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 06 5D E0 00 00  ..KK............
                      ^^^^^^^^^^^

I would take your working unit and use WD's formatter to change the physical sector size. Dump the bridge firmware before and after, then compare the dumps. I suspect that the dumps will differ at the abovementioned dword, plus I suspect that the first two bytes of the data block could be a 16-bit checksum or CRC.

You can't change the physical sector size in WD formatter, it just's allow XP compatability, which in reality is 4K sectored on the physical drive, but to the system it reports 512, so 4K sectors must be aligned (not sure if WD formatter performs that). One key it might be reported speed, the 14TB WD Red Plus is reported as 5400rpm (sw slowed down probably), buit the 16TB WD Gold is 7200.
The rest of the point I'll try to verify on the working unit.
