SSD Research - Liteon LCS 128M6S

May 8th, 2015, 0:56

This SSD is new, for research. In this thread I will post anything interesting I find. I hope to include things like:
- Console access
- JTAG
- Firmware update, RE, tricks, tips
- Possibility of NAND chip off recovery
- Wear levelling/ECC/data Structures etc
- anything interesting

Feel free to add anything you might know or find out, or any comments, criticism etc. All I ask Is the thread stays on topic to this research.

Type: SSD
capacity: 128GB
Interface: 6Gb/s SATA
Manufactured: Feb 2014
firmware: DC7110E
Condition: New
Controller: Marvell 88SS9187-BLD2 (code name Monet)
Controller CPU: Dual-core Marvell 88FR102 V5 CPU

Controller DataSheet: http://www.marvell.com/storage/assets/Marvell_88SS9187-001.pdf

I notice the string: KCC-REM-LIT-LCS-512M6S.. I wonder if this is a remanufactured/refurbished 512GB model?

On the board, a serial port is clearly marked with TRG obviously TX RX and GND. I got no output on a serial test with Putty. Serial Console needs to be enabled?

The other unpopulated 10pin block, or the test points TP1, TP52, TP53, TP56, TP61 etc, could be JTAG. Not sure what TM1, TM2, TM3 are. I will test these soon.

Hi

I understand your post is from long time ago, do you have circuit diagram for this? I am hoping to revive a drive which is giving slight smell when applied power. I think either a capacitor or voltage regulator is burned.

@xImran, if you can provide clearer photos, I should be able to show you the voltage test points.

    chip markings
    clearer photos/scans
terminal output when NAND R/B* pin grounded
support for DevSleep? (SATA power pin P3)
    onboard supply voltages
    serial flash dump

So any new progress???

Just got one myself
Liteon it corp lcs-256m6s 256GB

Got a huge ant infestation of the SSD. After cleaning
The power of the SSD just cycles over and over The current of the 5V rail jumps up and down from 0.08 to 0.2
Probably power issues. Any information given will be a great help

Check the e-fuse (?).

Clear photos would help.

The first photo is a bit too blurry, perhaps the "macro mode" of your camera might help if it has one?
The second photo looks like all the contacts on the flash chips should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol.

The e-fuse is one of those black thingies.
