So this drive is pissing me off. It is not failing in a way that I could say it was faulty to the seller. It is suspicious that the smart was turned off and when turned on was basically squeaky clean. I can"t trust it as a storage drive because of how it is acting and the possibility that it has been "repaired". And it reports some bad sectors, but totally inconsistent. So I need to try a different approach. Since it is useless to me as any sort of reliable data drive, it might as well be a major experiment. I want this drive to show its bad sectors. It must have them. I can read (and assume write) modules. So I would like to check the glist and plist, and possibly clear one or both so the drive would expose any bad sectors. I don't have professional tools or software, so I would be manually editing the modules to do this. So what modules would these be, and how can they be edited to clear the lists? Reminder that this is a WD10EARS-00Z5D1 drive, and I don't care if I kill it.

Thanks. Relo list looks like has a few entries, likely matching what has been reported as pending sectors since I have turned on smart and scanned it a few times. G-list seems clear (not surprising since this is suspected to be a repaired drive). The P-list definitely has many entries. So then I have to ask, is there a breakdown of the P-list module somewhere?

And assuming I clear or alter the P-list properly, how do I tell the drive to regenerate the translator?

With a little help from fzabkar I was able to get this drive to show some bad sectors and use it to test my my software for the advanced sector offset alignment. I am still disappointed that manufactures don't always include the advanced sector information in the identify device results. You would think they would want to include it so that software and operating systems would know what they are working with. It is not like it is difficult to change a few bits to reflect this...
