I am interested in your opinions as to which drives using the new perpendicular technology are the most or the least reliable. This is very important information for someone investing in a new RAID array.
thanks, Ben

Best 500GB = Samsung 501LJ
Best 750GB = not yet established that
Best 1TB = Hitachi

Worst 400GB = Seagate
Worst 500GB = Seagate
Worst 1TB = Seagate

Worst drive at the moment = Seagate. Failed bearings chief cause of failure.

Don't touch.

I actually prefer the Seagate when the bearings have failed, have pretty good success with them. The worst for me, based on the volume I recieve, are the 500GB Western Digitals!

We should also remember that Seagate out sells any other product out there.. More product more chance of failure..

However, the bearing issue used to be a pain until I got my jig

Been in industry a while but new to this site but appears there are some knowledgeable people on here... your question mentioned RAID but size of drives are now on single drives. Most common 500 GB and 1 TB RAID drives I see are Lacie Big Disk for me. But agree also see a lot of 500 GB WD externals, probably due to the crap enclosure, heat issues etc. Bottom line all will fail so keep with RAID1 or 5, or better still current backups. Actually forget the backups....job security 8)
