Accessing the IDE ATA HDD by programming in MCU

I am investigating the signal for programming the MCU to access the ATA HDD in scientifical uses. But I find the signal intercrossing cannot operate normally, do anyone tried to do it?

Please comment about these.

On the net you can find some articles of accessing a hd using an 8051 microcontroller.
Perhaps that can be of any use.
