i think i need new pcb board for st3640323as Tried new sata-usb adapter, board started
smoking & burned 2 of power tabs. Installed board from newer sgt 640 gb drive I had on hand with different firmware (orig SD13 vs new SD35)( before finding this forum, newbie on hd's ), received i/o error

disconnected "immediately" and put board back on empty drive I took it from and that drive is ok.

Drive has 550 gb data on it, was going to back it up to new 640 gb drive ( the one I took board from )

Hopefully, changing board will fix original drive.

defective drive info...
ST3640323AS
P/N 9FZ134-300
FIRMWARE SD13
reverse side white tag info

Hi,

"Just" changing the PCB will NOT work on this drive, trust me. No matter how close a match you get.

The ROM on the board is unique to the drive.

I tested this with two IDENTICAL known good drives from a RAID 0 configuration. Swapped the boards, no go. Until I moved then ROM's. Then they both worked again.

Also, if you connect the PCB alone to test equipment (e.g. Salvation) the drive reports it's model number, f/w version and serial number.
