My drive has over 11,000 Mp3's and I just really don't want to start my library over. Recovery services are rediculous in price for us personal PC users!

The drive failed when I wasn't home and took out my motherboard some how.

Anyways, here are the particulars of the drive.

PCB 100466824 Rev C

P/N: 9BX156-303
Firmware: SD15
Date Code: 0805
Site Code: WUXISG

What are the symptoms of the failure?

Does it spin up and sound normal?

Does it click?

Is it dead/smoking?

The drive does nothing and smells. My father tried it on one of his Esata raid stacks and it toasted the slot it was in immediately... My computer won't even turn on with it in but I haven't tried it because I had to RMA the board when this all happened. I have another thread calling for help that has the full story.

It sounds like your board has a shorted TVS diode. The fix is to desolder it, or snip it out with sidecutters. The drive will work perfectly OK without it, albeit without protection on the affected supply rail.

See the following article for help in identifying the components.

HDD from inside Main parts:
http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

If you need help confirming the faulty component, please upload a detailed photo.

If you choose to replace the board, be prepared to transplant the serial EEPROM chip from patient to donor. This IC contains unique, drive specific calibration data.
