I don't think that is accurate either.

Back to the drawing board.

Its surprising the ce-ata.org has limited info about this, yet i managed to find exact MMC Command Set and Reduced ATA set with in a vendors manual for one of their 1.8" drives.

Time for some dirty work.

The true CE-ATA 1.8" is MMC Electrical interface with an limited ATA command layer.

Lots of noobs get it wrong even Pro's sometimes. To say it comes with PC3k shows you cannot believe everything you read on this forum!!!

Rights - So its an MMC interface... with a reduced ATA set.

So if i issues CMD0 in MMC comamnd set - it hard resets the drive into MMC idle state for eg.

and

if i issue E0h on the same interface it will spin down and go into stanby mode?

So basically i could issue 25h to read DMA data?
So?

1.8" <ZIF> (MMC <-> SATA) <IDE> SOFT

How accurate is that?

Reasonable assumption :O)

Shorter route

1.8" <ZIF> (MMC <-> SATA)
1.8" <ZIF> (MMC <-> USB)

CE-ATA is different - The ZIF connector wont work. Anyway ZIF works on +5Volt signals, CE-ATA on +3.3v to improve battery life.

http://www.ce-ata.org

Anyways even china hasn't got this converter yet... (to work with reduced ata commands todo repairs) Otherwise the iPod solution is good enough to copy data off i suppose..

God the answers was IN MY FACE in one of my first posts. It all makes sense now.

I could use SPI- but that's just the fun way of doing things and if you need to use the reduced ata set that would be best way. Its the slowest too. :)

Just waiting for some equipment and we see what happens.

PS - To update every body who offered me ZIF connectors. CE-ATA uses LPC (Low Pin Count) connectors.

CEATA is a ZIF of 0.5mm pitch .
Zero Insertation Force (ZIF) usually have no indication of device working and its only to save space
all 1.8 drives are natively work on 3.3.v even micro sata or micro ide(CF) ones

http://www.ce-ata.org

Anyways even china hasn't got this converter yet... (to work with reduced ata commands todo repairs) Otherwise the iPod solution is good enough to copy data off i suppose..

Chinese ,item #30 downward

This is a rather old technology .since sata has a small-form factor by default CE-ATA is not used anymore
if you check ipod you see a 0.5mm pitch ZIF SOCKET on host
that Samsung drive has micro sata interface , convertor if any might be somewhere under that white ribbon .
if you got (micro- sata) ==> sata convertor you may test it might even have full command set without its flat flex

I know that most probably drc is right just curious to know how this is obvious from pics.

All of the ones I'm seeing here are PATA-ZIF. You can tell because of the wide(r) ribbon cable. CE-ATA has a significantly thinner cable, as does SATA-LIF. I'm not sure what that cable is in the picture ppumkin posted (if it is a standardized thing; maybe just some proprietary connector).

I think this CE-ATA was abandoned as it makes more sense to use micro sata- which are used widely in netbook, slim notebooks with large battery capacity.

These drives are found in the tiny iPods (not sure which models) and do not need fast transfer rate but mostly benefit from very low power consumption which micro sata does not provide .."YET" but im sure there are going to start using the 3.3v channel on sata specifically for these micro drives soon.

Any way- all those ZIF/LIF/MICRO SATA wont work with this Samsung drive. It is not IDE technology! And china does not make them because there is no market for sideline tech. But it is easy to get the parts you need to access the drive easy from ebay.cn :)

I might post the solution later when i have tested it all. Its just something i stumbled across and hardly anybody really knows what the heck it is. But its obvious from all the last posts what it is and what todo.

you are right .you are really experienced
abt the pic it might be just the usual apple thinking that its CE-ATA invention was perfect to the point that everybody else switched
to Sata so Samsung patched some of their sata drives with a cable to CE-ATA .

Not even the SATA LPC fits in this CE_ATA LPC- it is too wide and has too many points.
But after some modifications I can use it to connect to a bridge and access the data OK.

Apple was always a pain in the backside.

I'd love a solution too...have to get some files of a Toshiba drive with a CE-ATA interface. (It came out of a 160 GB iPod).
