Outsourcing for SAS drive recovery

March 8th, 2016, 4:13

Hello buddy's,

We got a server with 3 HDD 146GB SAS, Model: ST3146855SS.
They are in RAID 5 array.

The problem is - I can recognize only 1 HDD.
The 2 other drives looks like they are on busy mode. (Firmware problem) They spin normally, no weird noise and no ID.

I have SAS controller, but no PC-3000 SAS.

I need to fix the 2 damaged drives only.

I want to ask you for this service.
This is very ASAP case, so I'm willing to fly and visit them personally if they can do the work on the same day.

Please PM us a price quote for this service.

Thanks!

I suggest based on my experioence with damn SAS either works (slow/bads...etc but ID`s)
OR
Complete MESS,

better if you carefully open the cover and see it yourself without touching anything inside
see if surface scratched on top or not.

if you are not sure about what you are doing better consult a Pro. on this.

IF scratches are there, don`t bother

good luck

Hi einstein9, Thanks for your replay,

We are Data Recovery lab, and based on our experience its a classic FW problem. Platter is fine.

Anyway, we found a company for outsourcing.

Thanks.

Did you actually open it up and check though? SAS drives will sound perfectly normal even after they've completely sanded the surface off the platters. They don't click like SATA drives do.

My experience with them has been the same as Einstein mentioned. Either they work with a few possible bad sectors, or they are just catastrophically failed. Firmware issues are very rare in SAS drives.

Checking the sense code could shed further light. If it media error code, then already know the deal.
