ST2000LM003 donor

August 21st, 2019, 18:39

Hi friends,

today i'm looking for a donor on ebay (ST2000LM003 / HN-M201RAD/AVN / FW 2BC10002 / 01/2014 / China) (from Seagate Backup Plus external drive) and found this:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Seagate-Backup- ... SwvdxdUaiP

Should i take it? "Some noises inside but all pieces are there." ;-)

If anyone have a suitable donor please pm.

Regards, Boerge

The drive in the picture Only has a good PCB, at best. Not worth anything.

Further to that, it isn't even close to the model of drive you are seeking.

If your goal is to recover your files, seek professional assistance before it is too late, assuming it isn't too late already.

Lesson learned ... i will never try again to translate a joke from german to english.

This ebay-link was a joke - but i really need a matching donor. Patient's heads are dead (3 of 6 left) and I bought a donor with PN /AV2. After headswap and initializing with headmap changing in RAM the drive IDs and reads slowly from all heads but freezes every 20-60sec.

What tools are you using and what have you done to stabilize the drive?
Is it the same head/s that makes the drive "freeze, are heads working as expected when you put them back in donor?

+1

agreed why waste money if you are going to do it first time, there are absolutely more information required for matching a donor.

I'm using M9T-Tool from apextoollab and PC3K-Samsung-Tool/DE from ACE. Drive doesn't initialize without RAM headmap changing, so i think there is media damage in SA on Head0. With Headmap 111111 drive ID's but get BSY after some reading on ALL heads. So i think donor doesn't match. I didn't change the heads back to the donor yet.

What kind of "stabilizing-options" do i have? Thanks.

Again, this ebay-link was a joke! I've done headswaps many times. What kind of information do you need other than these in my first post? I have an good matching donor but last character in P/N doesn't match. I followed the matching criterias on donor drives blog but read anywhere else, that the last three characters after slash in P/N should also match.

For Samsung I'm not aware of anything on the label that will guarantee your donor has the same preamp as your patient. Match the preamp information and the heads typically work. You can see it in terminal when you first power the drive on. If it was the wrong preamp you should see a preamp warning.

Example 1:
*PAUNI_L2958*PA VID=0011 PN=000E Rev=0002
*PAUNI_L2958*PA VID=0011 PN=000E Rev=0002U

Example 2:
*PA_TI5565*PA VID=0012 PN=0056 Rev=000A
*PA_TI5565*PA VID=0012 PN=0056 Rev=000AU

your criteria clearly tells you have no idea how to match donor for Samsung... No Offense.

Blizzard, you're right!

Preamp doesn't match. I haven't checked this because i won't power on the drive with it's original heads to avoid any more scratches on the surface. Next case with such problem i'll isolate spindle-contacts from patient to check preamp-version first.

But i wonder, that there is any reading possible with totally dismatching preamp.

Thanks!

MindMergepk, you're also right.

As is said, i followed the head replacement instructions found on "donor drives blog" and different DR-forums. But i won't power on a drive with such crazy noises like the customer described. So i couldn't check the preamp ... i thougt.

After Blizzads comment i connected the damaged HSA off the drive to the PCB and see that the preamp doesn't match.

I'm not perfect - but i'm able to learn.

Starting Samsung-Tool, go to Terminal-Tab and power the drive on. In this case i hold the damaged HSA to the PCB-contacts.

Some preamps are combatible and inter-changeable.
You said you could read 'something' with donor heads? Then preamps were compatible and possibly there is media damage.
What is the terminal output?
What were the preamp versions on patient and donor?
