The problem isn't corrupted data, that assumption is off, the drive clicks and doesn't mount. The few IT folks I know said that it could be symptomatic of a controller board failure and to "just swap boards", so it seemed to make some sense to consider a stab at it. Calling the various data recovery services has also been pretty educational as is this site, I'm not at all trying to pretend I know much at all about any of this and I realize it's more complicated than "just swap boards". I am considering using a data recovery service and hope their $100 estimate won't cost more than a grand, there aren't any $200 options afaik but I'm all ears. Back to the newb sticky for me.
